Fight breaks out in Mexican house between chamber president and opposition leader

A physical fight broke out in the Mexican Senate on Wednesday, August 27, between the chamber’s president and a leading opposition politician.

Lawmakers exchanged punches, pushed each other, and shouted during the chaos.

The clash happened when an opposition party leader grabbed the Senate president as the meeting was ending.

Alejandro “Alito” Moreno, leader of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), confronted Senate President Gerardo Fernandez Norona from the ruling Morena party while lawmakers were singing the national anthem to close the session.

Fernandez Norona later said the fight followed a “heated debate” about whether armed forces from other countries should be in Mexico.

Live video shows Moreno approaching Fernandez Norona, insisting, “I’m asking you to let me speak,” while grabbing him by the arm.

Fernandez Norona responded, “Don’t touch me,” before the two started pushing each other. Moreno even knocked over a photographer during the scuffle.

Another senator joined the fight, swinging at Fernandez Norona as he tried to move away.

Fernandez Norona described the incident, saying Moreno pulled, pushed, and threatened him, saying, “I’m going to beat the shit out of you, I’m going to kill you.”

Fernandez Norona announced plans to call an emergency session on Friday and intends to suggest expelling Moreno and three other PRI senators involved in the incident.
