Isese Day: Lagos govt declares Wednesday public holiday

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that Wednesday, August 20, 2025, will be a public holiday for government workers in honour of the annual Isese Day festival.

The declaration, made on Monday, August 18, shows the state government’s commitment to protecting local traditions while encouraging cultural harmony across Lagos.

Isese Day is a celebration of Yoruba traditional religion and culture. Over time, it has grown into a major event in Nigeria, especially in the Southwest. In Lagos, the holiday has become a yearly tradition, giving people the chance to take part in rituals, festivals, prayers, and gatherings that honour ancestors and Yoruba gods.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the day as a reminder of the need to preserve cultural values in today’s modern society. According to him, the holiday is an opportunity for Lagosians to reconnect with their roots, celebrate their heritage, and strengthen unity in the diverse state.

The decision has been applauded by traditional rulers and cultural advocates. The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, praised the governor, saying the gesture is a boost to Yoruba spirituality and cultural identity.

Activities lined up for the celebration include visits to sacred sites, cultural performances, communal prayers, and traditional festivals. The government also urged residents to celebrate peacefully and respect other religions and cultures.

By joining other states like Oyo and Osun in officially observing Isese Day, Lagos further confirms its position as a stronghold of Yoruba culture and heritage.
