Former U.S. Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, said she would consider nominating Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize if he plays a key role in ending the war in Ukraine.
This comes just before Trump’s planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, this Friday.
Clinton told Jessica Tarlov on her Raging Moderates podcast that if Trump could help stop the war without making Ukraine give up its land, and truly stand up to Putin, she would consider nominating him. She added that her main goal is to prevent Ukraine from being forced into concessions.
Trump has publicly shown interest in receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. The award was previously given to his political rival, former President Barack Obama, in 2009 for his efforts in promoting international diplomacy and cooperation.
Ahead of the Alaska summit, Putin hinted at the possibility of a deal on nuclear weapons and praised Trump’s approach to the Ukraine conflict as “energetic” and “sincere.”
Putin also said the U.S.-Russia meeting could lay the foundation for long-term peace in Europe and worldwide. He mentioned that a deal could happen if both sides agree on controlling strategic offensive weapons.
The U.S. and Russia previously signed the New START treaty in 2011, which limits each country to 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 missiles and bombers. The treaty is set to expire on February 5, 2026.
The treaty has faced challenges since Russia invaded Ukraine. Putin has publicly claimed that Russia may no longer follow some treaty rules.
Trump has also expressed frustration with Putin, accusing him of misleading behavior during their conversations.
Last month, Trump told the New York Post that Putin often says nice things, but they turn out to be meaningless, showing how hard it is to trust him.
