Two suspected university students lost their lives when a tipper truck collided with a tricycle along the Tombia-Ammassoma road in Bayelsa State. Several passengers were seriously injured in the accident.
The crash happened near a sharp bend, an area known for poor road markings and frequent speeding. Eyewitnesses said the tipper truck was going too fast while going downhill and crashed into the tricycle.
Godspower Okolo, a local trader, told Daily Trust that the tricycle had no chance to avoid the crash. “The tipper was too close. The collision destroyed the tricycle completely,” he said.
Okolo added that kind-hearted locals rescued the injured and took them to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to a nearby morgue.
Okolo called for stricter traffic enforcement, urging the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Bayelsa Police to increase patrols, put speed breakers, and regularly check heavy trucks for safety.
Another resident, Mrs. Ebike Ekain, warned that without action, more lives could be lost on the road.
In the past 18 months, about 15 accidents have happened on the Tombia–Amassoma road, mostly involving tipper trucks and commercial tricycles.
DSP Musa Muhammad, the Bayelsa Police spokesman, confirmed the crash and said investigations are ongoing to find out what caused it.
