A top member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Jerry Gana, has shared his thoughts about the 2027 presidential election. He praised Peter Obi, calling him a good candidate, but also said the PDP has someone even better to offer Nigerians.
He explained that if Obi comes back to the PDP, he could easily win votes in northern Nigeria. Gana believes Obi would do better in the North under PDP because of how open-minded northern voters are.
In recent weeks, Gana has repeatedly asked Obi—who ran for president under the Labour Party in 2023—to return to the PDP. He believes Obi would stand a stronger chance against the current government if he was flying the PDP flag.
During an interview on Arise News, Gana confidently said that Obi would defeat any rival in the northern states if he contests with PDP backing.
However, Peter Obi has made it clear that he is still with the Labour Party. He also mentioned that, for now, he plans to remain with the party while also working with a coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi left the PDP in May 2022 to pursue his presidential run with the Labour Party.
Gana added that PDP is a well-grounded party. As a researcher, he said his findings show that Obi could win the North if he ran under PDP, thanks to the fairness of voters there.
He also revealed that PDP is reaching out to Obi. While praising Obi’s qualities, he said the party is still searching for the best option because, in his words, “Peter may be good, but we have somebody better.”
Reflecting on the 2023 election, Gana said the PDP made a mistake. He believes Atiku Abubakar should have supported Obi and made him the vice-presidential candidate.
Also speaking on the matter, former PDP National Legal Adviser Jacob Mark said Obi is free to return to the PDP anytime he wishes. He added that the PDP remains Obi’s best hope of winning in 2027.
