Pastor Tunde Bakare clears air on agreement with Buhari to succeed him as president

Pastor Tunde Bakare, who leads the Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC), has spoken out about claims that former President Muhammadu Buhari promised to hand over power to him. He said clearly that there was never a signed agreement between them.

Buhari ruled Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 and was also the country’s military leader between 1983 and 1985. While appearing on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Monday, Pastor Bakare shared that although there was no official promise, Buhari appeared to support the idea of him becoming president.

Bakare explained that Buhari gave him a certain look that showed he had confidence in him and wanted him to be among those who could succeed him. Bakare added that Buhari did what he could to help but nothing was agreed on paper. Out of respect, he said he would not speak badly about the late former president.

He also shared that before the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries, Buhari held a meeting with all those who wanted to run for president. During the meeting, Buhari told them he had let governors choose who would take over from them or seek a second term. He then asked the presidential hopefuls to choose freely, but made it clear who he personally wanted to succeed him.
