Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the captain of Portugal’s national football team, did not attend the funeral of his teammate Diogo Jota and Jota’s brother, André Silva. This funeral was held in Portugal, and many people thought Ronaldo would be there.
He was expected to travel to Gondomar, a town near Porto, to pay his last respects. Some of his teammates from Liverpool and the national team were already present. But Ronaldo, who is 40 years old and a father of three, didn’t appear at either the wake or the funeral.
Reports from a newspaper in Mallorca said Ronaldo was vacationing on the island. He was seen at two fancy locations aboard his private yacht, which is worth about £5.5 million. The yacht is 88 feet long and has five comfortable rooms and six bathrooms.
Many other Portuguese players, including those from top football clubs like Manchester United and Manchester City, showed up for the funeral. The ceremony was held in a church called Igreja Matriz de Gondomar.
A well-known journalist in Portugal, Antonio Ribeiro Cristovao, said people expected Ronaldo to come because he is the captain. He said if Ronaldo didn’t attend, then he should explain why. Being the team leader comes with responsibility, especially at such a sad time.
Another journalist, Luis Cristovao, said it was hard to understand why Ronaldo didn’t attend. He believed that no explanation would be enough to justify missing such an important event. A TV sports analyst, Pedro Fatela, also said Ronaldo’s absence would be widely talked about. He believed fans and the media would be waiting to hear Ronaldo’s reason for missing it.
Even though Ronaldo didn’t come to the funeral, he did share a touching message online. He said it was hard to believe what had happened, especially since he had just seen Jota with the national team and at his wedding. He sent his thoughts and sympathy to Jota’s wife and children and said that both brothers would be missed by everyone.
The accident happened while the two brothers were on their way to Spain. Diogo was planning to take a ferry to the UK instead of flying because he had recently gone through lung surgery. Sadly, their car crashed while driving a £180,000 Lamborghini at high speed. It’s believed a tyre burst caused the accident.
