Court to decide on application which freed Naira Marley and Sam Larry on allegations of being involved in Mohbad’s death on July 2

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja has picked July 2, 2025, as the date it will give a final decision on whether to cancel the legal advice that cleared Naira Marley and Sam Larry from being linked to Mohbad’s death.

This case was brought to court by Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba. He is represented by a top lawyer, Wahab Shittu. The main people being taken to court are the Attorney General of Lagos and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Shittu told the court that the DPP gave its legal advice too early. He believes the advice came before the coroner’s inquest was finished, which made the process unfair. He added that some suspects were released too soon because of the DPP’s advice.

Replying to this, the DPP’s office, through Ayinde Ibrahim, said those released were not found innocent. They were only discharged, which means the case could still reopen if new evidence comes up.

The DPP’s affidavit explained that they acted according to their job, after getting the police investigation file. They also said that neither the coroner nor Mohbad’s family saw the full case file.

The statement also said the DPP didn’t receive any order to stop their work or to report to the coroner before giving their legal advice.

The DPP believes there is no solid evidence that links Naira Marley, Sam Larry, or others named—such as Prima Boy and Opere Babatunde—to Mohbad’s death in any way.

They also argued that Mr. Aloba hasn’t brought forward any new proof or hired independent experts to investigate, so there’s no strong reason to cancel the legal advice.

Now, everyone is waiting to see what the court will decide on July 2—whether the legal advice will stay or be set aside. This decision could change the direction of the entire case about what really happened to Mohbad.
