Real Madrid’s top star, Kylian Mbappe, has been taken to the hospital during the Club World Cup. His condition may prevent him from playing in the tournament.

Mbappe did not take part in Real Madrid’s first match on Wednesday. The club had earlier reported he was unwell.

On Thursday, Real Madrid shared an update that Mbappe is now in the hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with gastroenteritis, a stomach illness that causes vomiting and diarrhea.

In a statement, the club said, “Mbappe has a severe case of gastroenteritis. He’s been admitted for tests and proper treatment.”

Coach Xabi Alonso spoke after Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Al-Hilal. He said they still don’t know if Mbappe will be ready for their next game.

“We’ll have to wait and see how he feels,” Alonso explained. “He’s been badly affected by a virus, so we’ll check on him closer to the match.”

Real Madrid is set to play their next game on Sunday against Pachuca, a team from Mexico. Alonso is hoping for a better performance from his squad.

Their last group match in the tournament will be against Red Bull Salzburg on June 26.
