Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate, has shared his thoughts on the recent issues with the 2025 UTME exam. He praised Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the head of JAMB, for admitting that there were problems during the exam.
Many Nigerians were upset after thousands of students failed the UTME. JAMB later admitted that technical issues caused some of the failures.
Prof. Oloyede, who looked emotional while speaking, apologized and said that about 379,997 candidates were affected by the problems.
After his apology, some Nigerians on social media called for Oloyede to resign or be sacked from his position.
In a statement released on Thursday, Peter Obi warned that we should not let these kinds of problems turn into a national crisis.
He praised Oloyede’s honesty and said it was a rare but good example of responsibility in a public office.
However, Obi also warned that these kinds of technical problems show how weak our institutions are—even important ones like JAMB.
He added that although JAMB’s quick action was good, the situation revealed something worse: the system itself is not strong enough.
Obi said the emotional stress on students and parents was very serious. In some heartbreaking cases, people even lost their lives. This shows how important it is to have fair exams and strong public trust.
He advised that JAMB and other important agencies should test their systems often, fix problems quickly, and communicate clearly with the public to avoid such issues in the future.
Obi finished by saying there should be no more glitches—not in JAMB or any part of the government. The cost of failure is too high.
