Nigerian entertainment lawyer, Ayo Shonaiya, has raised a thought-provoking question following the EFCC’s recent crackdown on the abuse of the naira.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently warned Nigerians against spraying the naira at public and private events, saying it is a criminal offense that disrespects the national currency.
Reacting to this development, Ayo took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to ask an interesting question:
“What about people who spray money on str!ppers in strip clubs? Is that also considered naira abuse?”
His question has sparked conversation online, as many Nigerians are now wondering how far the EFCC’s ban goes. While the commission is focused on protecting the naira, some people believe the rules may not clearly cover every type of social setting.
This has opened up a new angle in the ongoing conversation about how the naira is used, especially in entertainment spaces like clubs. It remains to be seen whether the EFCC will respond directly to Ayo’s question or issue further clarification.
Ayo Shonaiya is known for his work in the Nigerian entertainment industry and often shares his thoughts on social and legal matters affecting the country.
He wrote;
‘’So now, when the star stripper in the club goes up the pole, performs the no-hands “windmill” and comes back down in a zip, but stops dramatically just before she hits the stage, with her legs in the air, and the whooosh of Naira notes thrown in the air falls on her very gently from the sky…
“Is it a crime? @officialEFCC’‘
