Tinubu may attempt 3rd term – Lawyer laments alleged crackdown on opposition voices

Deji Adeyanju, an activist lawyer, has raised alarms about the ongoing crackdown on opposition voices under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In a Facebook post, Adeyanju expressed his concerns about the government’s increasing efforts to silence anyone who speaks out against it, including activists, artists, celebrities, and others who openly oppose the current leadership.

Adeyanju believes that the government is targeting anyone who challenges its power. He fears this crackdown could create a political environment where no one dares to speak out, leaving the president with unchecked authority. According to him, this suppression of dissent might even set the stage for Tinubu to attempt a third term in office, despite the constitutional limit of two terms for Nigerian presidents.

In his post, Adeyanju wrote, “Tinubu is coming for everyone—activists, artists, celebrities, and more. But many still believe it’s all just politics and jokes. By the time he’s done, no one will have the courage to challenge him or his government. He might even try to extend his rule beyond two terms.”

The concerns come amid growing reports of politically motivated arrests, including that of Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained VDM last week following an undisclosed petition. While the EFCC has not named those behind the petition, many believe that political figures might be using the agency to silence critics and opposition figures.

This crackdown on dissenting voices raises important questions about the future of democracy in Nigeria, with critics warning that it could pave the way for further political control and power extension by the president. As these events unfold, many are left wondering how far the government will go in limiting opposition and whether the country’s democracy will remain intact.
