Eni Aluko’s mother has spoken out about her daughter’s emotional struggles after a public disagreement with football legend Ian Wright. The former England footballer had accused Wright of standing in the way of progress for women in football. This led to a strong backlash online.
Sileola Aluko, Eni’s mum, told MailOnline that her daughter is “traumatised and upset” by everything that has happened. She said she’s doing all she can to support Eni and help her stay calm.
“This situation has really affected Eni,” her mother shared. “I remind her that football isn’t everything and that one tough moment doesn’t make her a bad person. She has faced many challenges before, and she will get through this too.”
Mrs. Aluko added that her biggest concern is making sure Eni doesn’t fall into emotional or physical health problems.
The fallout began after Eni made comments during a BBC Radio Four interview last week, where she said her career as a football pundit has been harmed. She also mentioned Joey Barton, who called her a “race card player” online — a comment that led her to sue him for libel.
Although Eni apologised to Ian Wright on Friday, he later posted on social media that he did not accept the apology.
