21 months after, NDLEA abandons family of 2-year-old toddler killed, as survivor risks blindness

Almost two years after a tragic incident involving the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Delta State, the family of a young boy who died and his injured brother are still crying for justice.

Back in July 2023, NDLEA officers were on a drug raid in the Okpanam area when stray bullets hit two small children at their mother’s shop. Two-year-old Ivan Omorhiakogbe died on the spot, while his one-year-old brother, Eromonsele, was shot in the left eye.

After the incident, the NDLEA admitted it was their fault. The Delta State Government and NDLEA promised to fly the injured child to the United States for medical treatment. The state governor even said they had completed plans and issued a letter to help the family get a visa.

Sadly, 21 months later, nothing has been done. The child has not been taken abroad for treatment, and the family has not been given any compensation for the loss of their son.

NDLEA reportedly offered N20 million as compensation, but the Senate rejected this offer, calling it unacceptable. Senator Neda Imasuen, who is handling the petition in the Senate, said the agency should pay at least N100 million. If NDLEA refuses, the Senate may take the money from the agency’s budget directly.

Meanwhile, the family’s lawyer, Mathew Edaghede, is demanding N2 billion. He said a young life was cut short and another child may go blind because of the incident.

The NDLEA and Delta State Government both promised justice and medical support, but as of now, those promises remain unfulfilled.
