The Bauchi State Police Command has told the organizers of the planned protest by the “Take It Back Movement” to think again about holding it today, Monday, April 7.
According to a police statement from CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the protest could be risky for public safety. The police also said the protest falls on National Police Day, a day to honor police officers, making the protest timing sensitive and possibly disrespectful.
While the police respect the right to protest, they believe the timing is not right. They also said that the organizers did not inform the police or ask for security help, which increases the risk of trouble.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has told officers to watch areas that might become protest spots and stop any possible violence.
The police warned that not following the rules for public gatherings could bring serious consequences if peace is disturbed. They advised the organizers to talk with government officials and share full plans for any future protests so security can be arranged.
Parents and guardians were also asked to keep young people away from protests that could cause problems. Residents were told to continue their normal activities and report anything suspicious using the Police Rescue Me app or emergency phone lines.
The protest is planned not only in Bauchi but in other major cities too. The “Take It Back Movement” said the protest is to demand better governance and also speak out against cyberbullying and the emergency situation in Rivers State.
