Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted that he made a mistake during their 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday. He said his decision to make defensive substitutions near the end of the match could have cost them the victory.
Maresca made the changes before noticing that 12 minutes had been added as extra time. He took off Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez and brought on defender Tosin Adarabioyo and midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
“I made the change without seeing how much extra time was given,” Maresca told reporters. “When I saw 12 minutes, I thought maybe I made the change too early. Luckily, we still won and we’re happy.”
After the changes, Spurs put more pressure on Chelsea, looking for an equalizer, but Chelsea managed to hold on and secure the win.
