Tottenham Hotspur manager, Ange Postecoglou, strongly criticized VAR after Pape Matar Sarr’s goal was disallowed in their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
During the match, two goals were ruled out by VAR. First, Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo had a goal cancelled because his teammate, Levi Colwill, was in an offside position. Just minutes later, Sarr scored a long-range goal for Spurs, but it too was disallowed after a lengthy VAR check.
The referee, Craig Pawson, had allowed Sarr’s goal at first. But after watching the replay on the VAR screen, he overturned the decision.
Speaking after the game, Postecoglou was clearly frustrated. He said the use of VAR is ruining the sport. “It’s killing the game, mate. It’s not the same game as it used to be,” he said. “The referee gave it and then needed six minutes to rule the goal out. It’s crazy mate. It’s madness.”
Many fans and experts are now questioning how VAR is being used and whether it is doing more harm than good to football.
