Court stops Pro-Wike rally in Bayelsa

A Bayelsa State High Court has stopped a rally that was planned to support Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The rally was supposed to happen in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, on April 12, 2025.

Justice I.A. Uzakah gave the order after the Bayelsa State Attorney General, Biriyai Dambo (SAN), went to court to stop the event. The court granted a temporary order to stop the rally until the case is heard properly.

The case, listed as Suit No. BYHC/YHC/CV/133/2025, names George Turnah, the main organiser from the NEW Associates group, and Minister Wike as the main people behind the rally. Others listed in the case include the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State.

The enrolled court order states that

“An order of the interim injunction is hereby made or granted restraining the 1st and 2nd Defendants, whether by themselves, their agents, associates, privies, representatives (or any person whatsoever acting at their behest), from conducting, convening, coordinating, engaging in, organising, participating in, holding, hosting, or facilitating any political assembly, rally meeting, or gathering within Bayelsa State, for the purpose of solidarity, hosting, and celebrating the 2nd Defendant in Bayelsa State, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice for Interlocutory Injunction.”

The court has set April 11, 2025, as the date to hear the full case.
