Mohbad: Naira Marley testifies in court, as coroner summons Sam Larry

Popular Nigerian singer, Naira Marley, has testified before a Magistrate Court in Ikorodu as part of the Coroner’s inquest into the death of fellow artist, Mohbad.

Naira Marley joined the court session virtually on Friday, where he shared his side of the story and denied all allegations linking him to Mohbad’s passing.

During his testimony, Naira Marley explained that Mohbad was signed to his record label, Marlian Records, under a contract to produce four albums. However, due to constant disagreements between Mohbad and his manager, Opere Babatunde, these albums were never completed.

He firmly denied ever threatening or attacking Mohbad, referring to a police report that cleared him of such accusations. He also dismissed claims that he had any role in Mohbad’s death, stating that he last saw the artist a year before he passed away and was not even in Nigeria at the time of Mohbad’s death.

When questioned about a viral video where Mohbad claimed that if anything happened to him, Naira Marley and the Marlian crew should be blamed, he responded that Mohbad and his parents later apologized, saying the video was made under the influence of drugs.

A second witness, Oluwasanmi Falade, who was Mohbad’s lawyer, disagreed with Naira Marley’s testimony. He confirmed that there was a dispute between Mohbad and Marlian Records regarding unpaid royalties. Despite writing multiple letters to Marlian Records about the issue, he never received a response.

Falade also revealed that Mohbad was attacked at Lekki Beach by music promoter, Sam Larry. Following his advice, Mohbad had reported the attack to the police, who attempted to arrest Sam Larry twice but were unsuccessful.

After listening to the testimonies, the court summoned Sam Larry to appear and testify at the next hearing on April 11. The coroner also requested the address of Mohbad’s driver so he could be called to testify.

Additionally, the pathologist who conducted an independent autopsy on Mohbad has been instructed to submit his findings before the next court session.

The case continues as more witnesses are expected to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s tragic passing.
