It’s embarrassing – Former Everton CEO, Wyness hits out at Man United over latest decision

Manchester United is facing more criticism after reports revealed the club is making further staff cuts. The latest move involves reducing services at the staff canteen in Carrington, sparking strong reactions.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness is unhappy with this decision. Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, he called it “embarrassing” for a club of Manchester United’s size to focus on such small cost-cutting measures.

Reports from last month suggested that Manchester United planned to sack around 100 more employees. This follows the 250 staff members who were already let go in 2024.

Club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is focused on cutting costs and reducing losses. However, Wyness believes that while some changes are necessary, the way they are being handled is damaging Manchester United’s reputation.

Wyness recalled his time at Aston Villa, where he introduced a staff canteen to keep employees happy and engaged. He criticized Manchester United’s approach, saying:

“It’s embarrassing for a club of Manchester United’s stature to get involved in small things like this.”

He also stated that while the club had too many staff members, cutting down from 1,100 to around 800 would have been a better solution.

“The way this has been done is very poor. It’s another embarrassment for INEOS and another PR disaster.”

Aside from their off-field troubles, Manchester United is also struggling on the pitch. They were recently knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham and are currently sitting in 14th place in the Premier League.

With the club facing criticism from both fans and football experts, it remains to be seen how they will handle their financial and performance issues moving forward.
