CAN calls on churches to thwart alleged attempts to Islamise Nigeria

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches to resist alleged efforts to turn Nigeria into a Muslim country. The Chairman of CAN in Akwa Ibom State, Bishop Chris Nyong, made this statement during a visit from the College of Bishops, a group within the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star.

Nyong claimed that some groups are trying to change Nigeria’s secular status, just as it happened in countries like Turkey and Morocco, which were originally Christian but later became Muslim-majority nations. He urged Christians to unite and protect religious freedom.

“It is important for all followers of Jesus Christ to come together and resist any attempt to Islamise Nigeria. The country must remain a secular state where everyone has the right to worship freely,” Nyong said.

He also mentioned that His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star has been standing alone in this fight, and all Christian groups should work together. He encouraged Christians to promote love, peace, and unity, while avoiding division and hatred.

In response, the Dean of the College of Bishops, The Patriarch, Shepherd Bassey Imowo, praised CAN for its efforts in promoting Christianity. He called for love and forgiveness, stressing that love is the key to overcoming challenges.

CAN continues to encourage unity among Christians in Nigeria, urging them to stand firm in their faith and work together for a peaceful and united nation.
