Customs intercept N398m cannabis sativa in Lagos

The Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command, has seized a large amount of cannabis sativa worth N398 million in Lagos.

According to the command’s spokesperson, Lomba Benjamin, officers intercepted 53 sacks of cannabis weighing 1,958kg. The operation took place at Ilase Sea Beach, about 200 nautical miles from the Lagos Anchorage.

The Customs Area Controller, Paul Bamisaiye, said that smugglers tried to escape by jumping into the sea, abandoning their boat. However, customs officers secured the boat and discovered 3,793 loaves of cannabis inside.

The seizure, which happened on February 20 at around 11 pm, was the biggest drug bust by the command under Bamisaiye’s leadership. He praised the officers for their dedication and vigilance in stopping illegal activities.

Bamisaiye also mentioned that two months ago, the command seized 15 sacks of cannabis, weighing 538kg and valued at N107 million.
