Osun PDP chieftain, Adekunle alleges plot to disrupt LG polls

A former caretaker chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Dr. Akindele Adekunle, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to cause chaos during the local government election scheduled for Saturday.

In a statement on Thursday, Akindele claimed that hoodlums brought from other states were being disguised as police officers to create violence.

He alleged that these individuals were being housed by top APC members and would be deployed under the cover of a police tactical squad.

According to him, the hoodlums were stationed in various towns, including Iragbiji, Ikire, Osogbo, Ila-Orangun, Iwo, Ilesa, and Ile-Ife, to intimidate PDP leaders and electoral officials.

He also accused the police of supporting the alleged plan, claiming that the tactical squad from Abuja was not in Osun to maintain peace but to assist in election violence.

Akindele further alleged that PDP leaders’ names had been compiled for possible arrests or even assassination. He urged voters not to be intimidated and to come out to exercise their voting rights.

The APC in Osun State dismissed Akindele’s claims, calling them false and politically motivated. The party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, said Akindele was spreading unnecessary fear.

According to Olabisi, the election itself was already invalid based on a recent Court of Appeal ruling, meaning there was no need for violence. He also suggested that Akindele should be investigated for making unverified accusations.

The APC also claimed that Governor Adeleke’s administration was failing and warned against any persecution of APC social media activists.

Security agencies have not yet responded to the allegations. The Osun State Police Command has not confirmed or denied the presence of tactical units from Abuja.

With the election set for Saturday, residents remain anxious, waiting for official security measures to be announced to ensure a peaceful voting process.
