I’m still facing four lawsuits from Afe Babalola’s firm – Farotimi

Activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi has revealed that he is still dealing with four separate lawsuits filed against him by lawyers from Afe Babalola’s law firm. He made this known while speaking during the Toyin Falola Interviews on Sunday.

This comes after the founder of Afe Babalola University, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, announced on January 27, 2025, that he would withdraw his cases against Farotimi.

Farotimi was earlier arrested and taken to court in Ekiti State after Babalola accused him of defamation in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. He was charged with criminal defamation at an Ekiti State Magistrates’ Court and with cyberbullying at the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti.

However, Babalola decided to drop his petition after intervention from the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other traditional rulers. This led to the withdrawal of the criminal charges against Farotimi.

Despite this, Farotimi stated that he still faces four civil lawsuits filed in different states by lawyers from Babalola’s law firm.

“I cannot speak much on this because even though the criminal charges have been dropped, I still have four lawsuits from the same law firm in different states,” he said.

Farotimi also defended his book, insisting that it is based on research and personal experience, not rumors or false claims.

“I did not write this book out of idle talk or gossip,” he stated. “It is a well-researched work. Anyone can read it and challenge me if they find any falsehood.”

The ongoing legal battles highlight the complexities of Nigeria’s justice system and the challenges faced by activists who speak out.
