The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has agreed to restore electricity at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
This decision came after a meeting involving the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, UCH’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, and IBEDC’s Managing Director, Francis Agoha.
UCH has struggled with power issues for over a year, facing three major electricity cuts in 2024. The ongoing crisis led to protests by medical students near the meeting venue.
After the discussion, Minister Adelabu described the situation as an embarrassment to both the hospital and the federal government. He assured that all related issues had been resolved.
To provide a lasting solution, the federal government will install a 50-megawatt solar mini-grid at UCH, the University of Ibadan, and the College of Medicine. This project is expected to be completed by mid-year.
In the meantime, IBEDC has promised to restore electricity to some parts of the hospital within 48 hours. The hospital will also settle its ₦283 million electricity debt in instalments over 8 to 12 months, along with its current bills.
This intervention aims to ensure a stable power supply for the hospital and improve healthcare services.
