On the morning of Saturday, January 18, a devastating tanker explosion occurred in Dikko, a town in Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State. The incident has left a trail of sorrow and devastation, claiming the lives of many people, including women and children.

The tragedy began when a petrol-laden tanker fell and spilled fuel on the road. Despite the risks, a large crowd, including bystanders, gathered to scoop the leaking fuel. Unfortunately, the tanker ignited, resulting in a massive explosion.

A resident, Mr. John, who witnessed the aftermath, estimated that over 100 people died in the explosion, with many others sustaining life-threatening burns. He shared, “The dead bodies I saw included children and women. Some victims were rushed to hospitals in Suleja and Sabon-Wuse, but their severe burns made it difficult for them to receive immediate treatment.”

Another resident, Abubakar Hussaini, explained that the explosion also affected passers-by and visitors heading to Dikko’s weekly market, which is held every Saturday near the site of the accident.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed profound sadness over the incident. Through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the tragedy as heartbreaking and extended his condolences to the victims’ families. He urged residents to prioritize safety and avoid dangerous actions like collecting fuel from spills.

The governor has directed relevant agencies to address the situation and ensure public safety. Security agencies have also been tasked with preventing further risks in the area.
