Conducting elections in Nigeria huge burden – INEC Chair Yakubu

Elections are essential to democracy, but in Nigeria, the cost of conducting them has become a significant challenge. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has described the financial burden as overwhelming.

Speaking during the 2024 budget presentation at the National Assembly, Prof. Yakubu revealed that INEC operates on a reduced budget of N40 billion—just half of the N80 billion initially requested. He explained that this reduction has affected the commission’s ability to fulfill its duties effectively, despite being one of Nigeria’s largest employers.

The INEC Chairman emphasized the need for better funding and collaboration between INEC and the National Assembly. He proposed a retreat where both parties could discuss solutions to the challenges facing the electoral process. “We need a major conversation,” Yakubu said. “The commission cannot continue conducting elections all year round.”

Prof. Yakubu also pointed out the poor condition of INEC’s facilities, including 860 buildings that require urgent repairs. He stressed that adequate funding is necessary for the commission to function efficiently and called on lawmakers to approve INEC’s proposed N126 billion budget for the upcoming year.

This plea highlights the growing financial strain on INEC and the need for strategic reforms to reduce costs while maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. A collaborative approach between the legislature and INEC could pave the way for sustainable solutions.
