US congress certifies Donald Trump’s electoral victory

The U.S. Congress has officially certified Donald Trump as the winner of the 2024 presidential election, clearing the way for him to take office on January 20.

During a Monday session led by Vice President Kamala Harris, who was defeated in the November election, the Electoral College results were formally confirmed. Trump won 312 electoral votes, while Harris received 226. This certification marks the final step in the election process.

Several lawmakers played a key role in the count, including Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), and Representatives Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) and Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.). Vice President-elect JD Vance also attended the session.

When Harris announced the certification, Republican lawmakers applauded with a standing ovation. Harris later addressed reporters, underscoring the significance of a peaceful transfer of power. “Today was about what should be the norm—ensuring that democracy stands strong,” she said.

Donald Trump celebrated the certification on Truth Social, writing, “Congress certifies our great election victory today—a big moment in history. MAGA!”

Trump’s return to the presidency is a pivotal moment in U.S. history, marking his second term after his initial loss in 2020. His upcoming inauguration symbolizes the resilience of democratic processes and the peaceful transition of power.
