Rivers: I’ve Been Using Red Biro For 14 Years – Wike Fires Back At Fubara

In Nigerian politics, symbolism often plays a key role in how leaders express power and authority. Recently, a heated exchange between Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Sim Fubara brought the metaphor of the “red biro” into the spotlight.

At a New Year’s Eve service held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Opobo Town, Governor Sim Fubara confidently declared that his “red biro” was still full, signifying his readiness to confront his opponents. “The red biro is still filled. It is still here with me. Every enemy plan will continue to crash,” he stated.

However, Minister Wike, speaking through his media aide Lere Olayinka, responded with a sharp reminder of his own political journey. Wike pointed out that he had been using the same “red biro” for 14 years, far outlasting Fubara’s two years. Olayinka shared on X (formerly Twitter):
“Someone who has only used the red biro for less than two years is somewhere reminding himself and boasting that ‘The red biro is still filled. It is still here with me.’ Issokay. Shouldn’t he also be reminded that someone has used the same red biro for 14 years and is still using it?”

The “red biro,” often symbolizing authority and decision-making, has become a representation of the growing tension between these two political leaders. While Fubara emphasizes his resolve, Wike highlights his long-standing experience, subtly asserting his seniority in the political landscape.

This debate not only reflects their personal rivalry but also sheds light on how metaphors can spark significant political discourse in Nigeria.
