Catholic priest arrested for shooting teenage boy dead over knockout during New Year mass in Imo

A tragic incident occurred at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, on January 1, 2025, leaving the community in mourning.

During the New Year Mass, a teenage boy was accidentally shot and killed by Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya. Witnesses claim the priest was attempting to stop a group of boys from setting off fireworks (knockouts) inside the church. While firing warning shots to disperse the group, the gun reportedly malfunctioned, leading to an accidental discharge that struck the boy.

The shocking event has left the church and the local community in disbelief. Many residents have expressed outrage and called for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind the unfortunate event.

The Imo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya. Speaking on the case, Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said, “We have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the facts. Updates will be provided as the case develops.”

This tragic incident has overshadowed the New Year celebrations, leaving the community grief-stricken and calling for justice for the young victim.
