James Hitchcock, a beloved goalkeeper for Barton Town FC, tragically passed away after suffering a serious head injury during an alleged attack while out in York. The incident occurred at York’s railway station on Sunday, leaving Hitchcock in critical condition. Despite efforts to save him, he died from his injuries in the hospital on December 18.
Hitchcock, a married father from Cottingham in East Yorkshire, was in his 30s. He had joined Barton Town FC in May from Bridlington Town and was a well-liked member of the team. The club’s chairman, Mark Gregory, expressed his devastation over the loss, describing Hitchcock as a “popular but quiet” player.
The man charged in connection with Hitchcock’s death, 22-year-old Mckenzie Dicicco from Stockton-on-Tees, has been charged with murder and affray. Dicicco appeared in York Magistrates’ Court but did not enter a plea.
In honor of Hitchcock’s memory, all of Barton Town FC’s games scheduled for this weekend have been postponed. The club’s social media posted heartfelt tributes, offering their deepest condolences to Hitchcock’s wife, April, their young son Freddie, and his family.
Tributes have also come in from Hitchcock’s former team, Bridlington Town, who called his death “devastating.” They remembered him fondly, and said, “Hitch will always be on our minds and in our hearts.” A tribute for Hitchcock will be held before their home game on Boxing Day.
Barton Town FC and its supporters are mourning the loss of a player who was much more than just a goalkeeper. The club’s players, staff, and fans are united in remembering him and offering support to his grieving family.
