Residents of Ifite-Awka in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State are living in fear following a deadly attack by unidentified gunmen on Wednesday, December 11. The attack left four people dead and a hotel manager abducted, sparking panic throughout the area.
The attack began around 7 pm, with gunshots echoing across busy locations such as Book Foundation Junction, Ukwu Aki Bus Stop, “B” Bus Stop, Commissioners’ Quarters, and the Bamboo area. Witnesses described how the gunmen shot into the air, creating chaos and fear among residents and traders.
A local trader, who spoke anonymously, described the scene:
“They killed three people at Book Foundation Junction and one at Ukwu Aki Bus Stop. They also stormed a hotel at Commissioners’ Quarters and kidnapped the manager. We heard they initially demanded N20 million for his release but later reduced it to N12 million.”
Another resident, Chibuike, confirmed the killings, saying:
“They killed three people last night and another one this morning near Ukwu Aki. They also took three people from the hotel and drove away with their cars. This December is turning into a nightmare. Everyone is afraid to go out.”
As a result of the violence, many residents have fled their homes, and shops in the area remain closed. The fear of further attacks looms large as the festive season draws near.
The hotel management confirmed the abduction but refused to comment further. The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, urged families of the victims to contact the police for assistance.
This tragic incident highlights the rising insecurity in the region, leaving residents deeply concerned about their safety. As the community mourns, they also hope for swift action to restore peace and security in Anambra State.
