A tragic event occurred in Borno State on Wednesday when a Dangote truck fatally struck two students from Borno State University (BOSU), sparking widespread protests. The accident took place in the Jimtilo area along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road.
Abba A. Massa, the university’s Information and Public Relations Officer, confirmed the unfortunate incident. Several other students sustained injuries and were quickly taken to Umaru Shehu Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical care.
“The students, a male final-year student and a female part-two student, lost their lives when a truck belonging to Dangote, traveling at high speed, lost control and ran into the BOSU students’ bus while they were on their way home after their semester exams,” the statement said.
In response to the tragedy, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babagana Gutti, alongside the Borno State Head of Service, Barrister Malam Fannami, and Registrar Zanna Mustapha Kashim, stayed with the victims overnight to provide support and comfort to the injured.
Demonstrating remarkable empathy, a busload of BOSU students arrived to donate blood and offer support to their classmates fighting for their lives. Their solidarity highlighted the strength of the university community during this painful time.
The university announced that the two deceased students would be buried on Thursday, December 12, 2024, as the campus and community mourn the tragic loss.
This incident has deeply affected the BOSU community, prompting calls for improved road safety and justice for the victims.
