Paul Ibe, the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, recently shared that both Atiku and Peter Obi have learned valuable lessons from the 2023 general election. During a recent appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Ibe hinted at the possibility of a merger between Atiku and Obi to challenge the current government, which they criticize as “incompetent and clueless.”
In the 2023 presidential election, Atiku, the candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi, who ran for the Labour Party (LP), together earned over 12 million votes. Despite this, Bola Tinubu from the APC emerged victorious with over 8 million votes. Obi, who had been a longtime ally of Atiku, left the PDP to join LP after realizing he would not secure the party’s ticket.
Analysts suggest that a united effort from Atiku and Obi could have removed the APC from power. Now, Ibe states that both leaders are determined to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past and are considering all options for the future. However, when asked if Atiku would step down for Obi in the 2027 elections, Ibe responded that “all options are on the table,” leaving the question unanswered.
“Nigerians deserve better than what they are getting. It’s never been this bad in this country and there is no hope,” he said
“The truth of the matter is that Atiku Abubakar has promoted opposition parties to work together, to come together; that is the only way they can kick out this incompetent and clueless government. And I believe that discussions have been going on.
“Lessons have been learnt from 2023 by all parties including Atiku Abubakar and I believe that it is on the basis of the lessons that have been learnt that they are moving forward and having discussions.
“They have learnt that lesson and want to be united and go forward,” he stated.
He said for Atiku, “all options are on the table”, but refused to provide an answer to the question of whether the former Vice President would step down for Obi in the 2027 election.
Atiku and Obi’s possible collaboration could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape as they aim to challenge the ruling APC in the upcoming elections.
