Nigerian footballers are making waves again, gaining recognition on both the African continent and the global stage. This resurgence has been fueled by the outstanding performances of players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and others who continue to raise the nation’s profile in world football.
In October 2023, Victor Osimhen finished 8th in the Ballon d’Or rankings, becoming the highest-ranked African player, ahead of Egypt’s Mohammed Salah, who placed 11th. Osimhen’s success came after a phenomenal 2022/23 season, where he scored 26 goals to lead Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years. In total, he netted 28 goals and provided 10 assists in 49 games. His efforts were further recognized when he won the CAF Player of the Year award in December 2022.
Ademola Lookman has also made a name for himself, becoming the only African shortlisted for the 2023 Ballon d’Or. He was ranked 14th after an impressive season with Atalanta. Lookman has grown significantly as a player, improving his skills and shouldering more responsibility under his coach’s guidance. He is now the favorite to win the 2023 CAF Player of the Year award, which would mark consecutive wins for Nigeria.
Other Nigerian stars, including Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, Paul Onuachu, and Asisat Oshoala, have been nominated for the 2024 Best FIFA Awards. Troost-Ekong’s leadership and performance earned him the MVP title at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, solidifying his place among Africa’s best players.
Football analyst Clinton McDubus highlights the reasons behind this recognition. “Excellence at the top level cannot be hidden,” he explains. He credits Osimhen and Lookman for refining their skills and proving their worth on the global stage. McDubus also notes that Nigerians’ active presence on social media helps amplify the achievements of these players.
Looking forward, McDubus believes Nigerian football must capitalize on this golden generation of talent by winning major titles and qualifying for tournaments like the World Cup. “It would be embarrassing to have such world-class players and not achieve significant victories,” he said.
As Nigerian players continue to shine, their achievements are a source of pride and a reminder of the nation’s potential in global football.
