The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has achieved significant milestones in its fight against drug trafficking and abuse over the past three years. The agency announced securing 9,034 convictions and arresting 52,901 individuals, including 52 high-profile drug barons, during this period.
Buba Marwa, the NDLEA’s Chief Executive Officer, shared these updates at a business luncheon hosted by the Island Club in Lagos. According to Marwa, these arrests highlight how deeply drug-related problems have affected all levels of society.
“In the last three years, we have confiscated 8.6 million kilograms of illicit drugs and destroyed 1,572 hectares of cannabis farms,” Marwa stated. He emphasized that these figures reflect the agency’s determination to rid the country of illegal drug activities.
Rotimi Olasode Martins, the Chairman of the Island Club, praised Marwa for his dedication to combating drug abuse. He acknowledged the agency’s efforts, noting that drug abuse has infiltrated all parts of society, threatening the future of young people, destabilizing families, and undermining the nation’s progress.
The NDLEA’s achievements are a testament to its commitment to creating a safer, drug-free Nigeria. However, it is also a reminder that more work needs to be done to completely eradicate this societal menace.
