The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has called on Nigerians to stop reporting police misconduct on social media. He made this appeal during a recent conference for Police Public Relations Officers (PPROs) and communication experts held in Asaba, Delta State.
He said, “We appeal to the public not to resort to social media when reporting the conduct of police officers but rather use the Police Complaints Response Unit.”
According to the IGP, social media, while useful for sharing opinions, often spreads unverified information. This can lead to misunderstandings and damage the reputation of the Nigerian Police Force. He stressed that such misinformation undermines the integrity of the force and complicates efforts to address grievances effectively.
Instead, the IGP urged citizens to use the Police Complaints Response Unit (PCRU) for reporting misconduct. This unit provides a structured and transparent process for handling complaints, ensuring accountability and fairness. By using this official channel, Nigerians can avoid the risks of spreading false information and contribute to improving trust between the police and the public.
The IGP emphasized that promoting transparency and accountability is essential for a stronger police force. He believes that addressing complaints through proper systems will help resolve issues constructively and foster better relationships with the public.
Nigerians are encouraged to support these efforts by reporting cases through the PCRU rather than social media. By doing so, they can help build a more credible and effective police system in the country.
