South African singer, Tyla beats Burna Boy, Asake, Rema, Tems, and Ayra Starr to win Best Afrobeats award at MTV EMAs 2024

South African singer Tyla has made history by winning the Best Afrobeats award at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), held on Sunday, November 10, at the Co-op Arena. The award show, which celebrated its 30th edition this year, highlighted the best in global music.

Tyla’s win is a huge achievement, especially since the Best Afrobeats category featured some of the biggest names in the music world, including Nigerian superstars Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Asake, and Ayra Starr. Despite the tough competition, Tyla’s talent and hard work stood out, earning her this prestigious award.

Not only did Tyla win the Best Afrobeats award, but she also took home the Best R&B and Best African Act awards, proving her versatility and influence in African music.

During her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed her gratitude, thanking her team, her family, and her fans, known as the Tygers, for their support. She also acknowledged the other nominees, calling them “insane” and praising how far they have taken the Afrobeats genre.

Tyla shared a heartfelt moment with her sister, Sydney, who joined her on stage to celebrate. “Girl, I’m proud of you!” Sydney said, as the crowd cheered. Tyla concluded her speech by thanking God and expressing how Afrobeats has opened many doors for African music worldwide.
