In a bid to help Nigerians manage rising fuel prices, President Bola Tinubu has given motorists a new option: continue buying petrol at ₦1,000 per litre or switch to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for just ₦200 per cubic meter. This announcement was made during a meeting with executives from NIPCO at the State House, Abuja.
During the meeting, President Tinubu praised NIPCO for its efforts in supporting Nigeria’s energy transition by promoting CNG use. He stressed that CNG, being a cleaner and cheaper fuel, is key to the government’s goal of improving energy security and reducing the country’s reliance on petrol. This strategy is part of a larger push to diversify the Nigerian economy and reduce the cost of living for its citizens.
The President noted that CNG comes with several benefits, including being more environmentally friendly, as it produces fewer emissions compared to petrol. “CNG, being a cleaner and more affordable fuel, reduces the carbon footprint and saves consumers significant fuel costs,” he explained.
To encourage more Nigerians to adopt CNG, the government has introduced incentives. Commercial drivers will be able to convert their vehicles from petrol to CNG for free, making it easier for them to switch to a more affordable and sustainable option.
Ramesh Kasangra, NIPCO’s director, thanked President Tinubu for his ongoing support of the CNG sector. He assured the President that NIPCO remains committed to expanding CNG infrastructure across the country, making the fuel more accessible to all Nigerians. With over 40 years of experience in Nigeria, NIPCO is confident in its ability to support the country’s energy future.
By offering this alternative, President Tinubu aims to lower fuel costs for Nigerians and promote cleaner energy solutions, ultimately helping to build a more sustainable and economically secure nation.
