Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has voiced his concerns over the state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), claiming that the party’s leadership has been infiltrated by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). His comments came after the recent governorship election in Edo State, which saw the PDP suffer a significant loss.
Melaye specifically pointed the finger at the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagun, accusing him of being responsible for the party’s decline. According to Melaye, the leadership style of Damagun is not only ineffective but also damaging, with more APC members now holding influence within the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) than actual PDP members.
Following the recent governorship election in Edo State, Melaye took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts on the party’s current situation. He described the election as a sign of worse things to come for the PDP, hinting that under Damagun’s leadership, the party is nearing collapse. Melaye’s words reflect the disappointment and frustration felt by many within the party.
In the just-concluded election, PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, lost to APC’s candidate, Monday Okpebholo. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ighodalo secured 247,274 votes, while Okpebholo emerged victorious with 291,667 votes. This loss has deepened the concerns about PDP’s direction under its current leadership.
Melaye didn’t mince words when expressing his fears for the PDP. He claimed that the founding fathers of the party, including respected leaders like Alex Ekwueme and Solomon Lar, would be deeply disappointed in how the party is being run. He had previously accused Damagun of attempting to destroy the PDP, a sentiment echoed by other party members who feel that change is necessary.
