Are You Afraid of Death?’: Abuja Hotel Victim Describes Harrowing Experience with Suspected Fraudster

A recent incident at the Top View hotel in Abuja has shocked many, as Olivia Ijeoma Chukwuemeka shared her harrowing experience of being tied up and threatened by a suspected fraudster, Joseph Efe. This case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the dangers that can arise from online dating.

Olivia, who lives in Enugu but frequently visits Abuja for business, met Efe through a hookup site known as “coded runs.” After communicating for some time, Efe invited her to the hotel. Upon her arrival, things took a sinister turn.

Efe greeted Olivia with a chilling question: “Are you afraid of death?” He threatened her, stating that if she cooperated, he wouldn’t harm her like he had done to other women. The fear quickly escalated as he slapped her and demanded that she undress.

When Olivia attempted to flee, she discovered that Efe had locked the door. He then used her dress to tie her hands and, when that wasn’t tight enough, resorted to using tape. To further intimidate her, he turned the television volume up high and stuffed a handkerchief in her mouth, effectively silencing her.

Efe then took Olivia’s phone, forcing her to unlock it by placing her thumb on the screen. He demanded her bank account details, and after discovering there was no money in her account, he warned her to stay quiet before leaving the room.

After a terrifying wait, Olivia noticed movement outside the door. Spotting hotel staff, she managed to signal for help. She struggled to the window and banged on it, drawing their attention. Thankfully, the staff heard her cries and came to her aid, allowing her to point out the direction in which Efe had fled.

Joseph Efe was arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and paraded before the press, revealing his methods of targeting women through online platforms. Commandant Olusola Odumosu confirmed that Efe had been luring victims with the intent to rob them.

This incident serves as a grave reminder of the potential dangers associated with online dating. Women must remain vigilant and take precautions when meeting individuals they meet through these platforms.

Olivia’s story underscores the importance of awareness and safety in the age of online dating. As more people turn to these platforms, it’s crucial to recognize the risks and prioritize personal safety. If you or someone you know is using online dating services, always meet in public places and inform friends or family about your plans.
