The Lagos State Government has issued an urgent notice regarding the demolition of the Mopol 20 Barracks located in Onigbongbo, Ikeja, due to the risk of collapse. This action follows an assessment by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), which found that some parts of the barracks are in a critical state.
The demolition will focus on the old Block 3 section of the barracks, which has been deemed unsafe for residents. The agency is planning an emergency evacuation of the affected structures to ensure the safety of those living nearby.
According to Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, their response team has carefully evaluated the building and confirmed that it, along with nearby structures, must be cleared immediately to avoid any potential disaster. A structured plan is in place, which includes a thorough assessment, safe evacuation, and a controlled demolition.
This preventive measure is being taken under the direction of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to prevent any secondary incidents, such as further damage or injuries. Oke-Osanyintolu also urged the public to stay calm, avoid panic, and refrain from spreading rumors on social media.
The LASEMA official assured residents that the situation is being carefully monitored and managed by relevant authorities to prevent any harm.
