INEC Announces End of Political Campaigns for Edo Governorship Election Today

In preparation for the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a critical deadline for political campaigns. As of midnight tonight, September 19, 2024, all campaign activities must come to a complete stop. This directive is part of INEC’s efforts to ensure a fair and orderly election process.

INEC’s announcement highlights that political parties must cease all forms of campaigning, including rallies, processions, and media promotions. This deadline is established under Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2024 Edo State Governorship election. Any activities that continue beyond this point will be deemed illegal and subject to penalties as outlined in Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022.

On Election Day, September 21, 2024, INEC also prohibits parties, candidates, and their supporters from wearing campaign attire or bringing campaign materials to polling units. This measure is intended to prevent any potential intimidation or undue influence during the voting process, ensuring a neutral and unbiased environment for all voters.

This restriction aims to uphold the integrity of the election and provide all candidates and political parties with an equal playing field. Voters are encouraged to focus on choosing their preferred candidates without the influence of ongoing campaign activities.

The implementation of these rules underscores INEC’s commitment to a transparent and fair election process, helping to maintain public trust in the democratic process.
