Gombe Hospital Prohibits Staff from Crypto Mining During Work Hours

The Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe has introduced a new policy that prohibits its employees from engaging in cryptocurrency mining while on duty. This move is aimed at improving patient care and reducing workplace distractions caused by the new trend of crypto mining.

The decision to implement this ban stems from growing concerns that staff members were becoming distracted by mining activities. Management observed that employees were spending excessive time on their phones, attempting to mine cryptocurrency, which was interfering with their primary responsibilities of attending to patients.

The hospital’s internal circular makes it clear that employees are allowed to participate in crypto mining and other personal activities outside of their official working hours. The goal of this policy is to ensure that staff are fully focused on their duties during work hours, thereby enhancing the quality of patient care.

Adamu Usman Tela, the deputy director of administration at the hospital, explained the rationale behind the decision on September 19. Tela stated, “We took this step even before receiving any complaints, because taking care of the public health is the first thing.” This proactive approach underscores the hospital’s commitment to prioritizing patient care over personal activities during work hours.

To ensure compliance with the new policy, the hospital has deployed SERVICOM, ACTU, and Security Officers. These teams will monitor staff activities to ensure that the ban is followed and to address any potential violations. This enforcement strategy highlights the hospital’s dedication to maintaining a focused and effective work environment.

The ban on crypto mining at Gombe Hospital reflects a broader trend seen across various sectors in Nigeria, where the use of personal devices for cryptocurrency mining has led to increased workplace distractions. As more people engage in these activities, institutions are grappling with the need to balance technological advancements with maintaining productivity and focus.

By taking this step, the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe is setting a precedent for other institutions facing similar challenges. The emphasis on patient care and the use of monitoring tools to ensure compliance illustrate the hospital’s commitment to both innovation and excellence in healthcare.
