The Nigerian Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has issued a strong warning to citizens living in flood-prone areas. This comes after the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, which is expected to cause flooding in certain parts of the country. As the rainy season continues, people living near rivers and floodplains are advised to move to safer ground to avoid potential disasters.
What is Happening?
The Lagdo Dam, located in Cameroon, has begun releasing water into the River Niger and River Benue, two major rivers that run through Nigeria’s North Central region. This is a common annual event, but each year it raises concerns about potential flooding in Nigeria, as these rivers may struggle to contain the extra water.
Government’s Warning:
Speaking on national television, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, advised Nigerians living in areas prone to flooding to relocate immediately. The release of water from the Lagdo Dam often leads to rising water levels in these rivers, putting homes, businesses, and lives at risk.
Mohammed emphasized the need for residents in affected areas to act quickly. He explained that NIHSA has coordinated with Cameroonian authorities to release the water in a controlled, gradual manner. This will help the rivers handle the increased water flow and hopefully reduce the impact on communities.
States at Risk:
NIHSA has listed 11 states most at risk of flooding due to the release from the Lagdo Dam. These states include:
- Adamawa
- Taraba
- Benue
- Nasarawa
- Kogi
- Edo
- Delta
- Anambra
- Bayelsa
- Cross River
- Rivers
People in these areas are strongly advised to prepare for possible flooding and take precautionary measures, including moving to safer
locations if they live near rivers or flood-prone regions.
Preventing Future Floods:
While the situation is currently under control, with water being released from the Lagdo Dam in a measured way, the rising river levels pose a threat. Mohammed stressed that preventing severe floods requires the cooperation of all Nigerians. Past releases have caused destructive flooding, leading to loss of lives, homes, and livelihoods. Therefore, it’s crucial for citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety advice.
Recent Flooding in Borno State:
This warning follows recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, where water from the Alau Dam overflowed, causing devastation. Over 30 people lost their lives, and thousands of homes were destroyed. This tragic event highlights the importance of taking flood warnings seriously and relocating to safer areas when advised.
