What is Thermite?
The chemical compound known as thermite was first used during World War I. German forces dropped it from airships over Britain, and it reappeared during World War II, used by both Germany and the Allies. Thermite was often placed inside captured weapons to melt their parts, making them unusable.
Thermite is just one of several incendiary weapons. Other well-known fire-based weapons include napalm and white phosphorus. These weapons use extreme heat to destroy equipment or injure people, often leading to severe burns or respiratory issues.

Ukraine’s “Dragon Drones”
In recent developments, Ukraine has taken the use of thermite to a new level. They have developed “dragon drones” that release molten metal onto Russian-held positions. Several videos have surfaced, including one shared by Ukraine’s defense ministry, showing these low-flying drones dropping torrents of fire onto Russian troops in forested areas.
The Power of Thermite
Thermite is a mixture of aluminum powder and iron oxide. When ignited, it burns at temperatures as high as 4,000°F (2,200°C). This intense heat can quickly destroy trees, bushes, or any cover Russian soldiers may be using. If soldiers are directly exposed, the burning thermite can seriously injure or kill them. It can even melt through metal, leaving little defense against its effects.
With such destructive potential, thermite and the “dragon drones” that deploy it are proving to be a dangerous new tool in Ukraine’s arsenal.
