For years, Tuokpe kept silent about the abuse, hoping to protect her children and maintain a complete family. Like many women in abusive relationships, she initially made excuses for her husband’s behavior, even convincing herself that she might have been the cause of his anger. However, the turning point came when she realized her daughter had witnessed one of the violent episodes. It was at that moment Tuokpe knew she could no longer stay in the marriage, nor could she continue to make excuses for Reno’s actions.
