The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially denied claims that President Bola Tinubu extended the tenure of the current Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun. According to the NPF, the President only approved a standard four-year term for the IGP, in accordance with the law that governs the office.
In a statement released on Friday, September 6, Police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi addressed the confusion and clarified that the IGP’s appointment follows the legal process, as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.
Adejobi explained that there has been a misunderstanding about the IGP’s tenure. Some reports have wrongly suggested that President Tinubu extended Egbetokun’s time in office. However, the President’s approval was not an extension but rather a formal confirmation of the four-year term, as is required by law.
The appointment letter, which is dated November 3, 2023, confirms that the IGP’s four-year tenure follows Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Third Schedule of the Nigerian Constitution (1999, as amended). The Police Council approved this term shortly after Egbetokun was appointed.
Muyiwa Adejobi emphasized that there is no need for the IGP to lobby for an extension, as his current tenure has not yet expired. He also warned against the spread of false information, noting that certain individuals are attempting to create confusion for personal and financial reasons.
The Nigeria Police has urged the public to disregard rumors and focus on the facts surrounding the IGP’s appointment and tenure, as the process was done in accordance with the law.
