NNPCL: No Guarantee of Lower Petrol Prices with Dangote Refinery

The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) has recently announced that starting from September 15, it will begin sourcing petrol from the new Dangote Refinery. However, NNPCL has made it clear that this does not guarantee a drop in petrol prices.

According to NNPCL’s spokesman, Olufemi Soneye, the cost of petrol, whether from the Dangote Refinery or elsewhere, will still be influenced by global market conditions. Soneye emphasized that domestic refining alone won’t necessarily result in lower prices for consumers.

This announcement comes in response to concerns raised by the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which alleged that recent price changes might be an attempt to undermine the Dangote Refinery’s potential to offer cheaper petrol. MURIC also suggested that NNPCL might become the sole purchaser of products from the refinery, potentially limiting competition and affecting prices.
