In a shocking turn of events, residents of Muhammad Inuwa Wushishi Housing Estate in Minna, Niger State, were forced to flee their homes following a violent raid by armed hoodlums on September 2, 2024. The attackers, believed to be artisanal miners, caused extensive damage to around 50 houses and vehicles before warning the remaining residents to leave, threatening further violence.

The raid came just a week after the community had reported damage from mining activities to the police. Reports suggest that about 100 hoodlums overwhelmed local police officers until reinforcements arrived to drive them away.

John Regan, a local resident, reported that the attackers, armed with cutlasses and other weapons, were seeking revenge for the community’s efforts to stop nearby mining operations. Mrs. Babalola Balkisu, another resident, recounted receiving a call while at work about the break-in at her home. Although the attackers broke her windows, her son managed to lock the doors, preventing them from entering. Balkisu expressed her growing concern about the community’s safety due to the persistent issues with illegal mining.

Dr. Ya-Aba Mohammed, a community leader, linked the attack to recent actions taken against the mining activities. He mentioned that the community has been facing increasing tensions and thefts related to these operations.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that they received a distress call around 2:00 p.m. Police patrol teams, led by the DPO of Maitumbi, were dispatched and successfully dispersed the attackers. Unfortunately, one person was killed during the attack, and the body was taken to the general hospital morgue. SP Wasiu Abiodun, the police spokesperson, assured that normalcy has been restored and additional patrols have been deployed to prevent further incidents. An investigation is currently underway to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
